Second Little Library

The community library of Jlegongan in Margodadi, Seyegan, Sleman Regency of Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia is selected as the second library for our program from July to September 2024.

Perpustakaan Umum Dusun Jlegongan was founded in 2015 from a concern about the absence of social and educational space in the village. The library was started with a mission to foster belonging and sanctuary and allow exposure to books and opportunities for reading.

Perpustakaan Umum Dusun Jlegongan have approximately 300 books in their colllection, the majority of which are books for the young readers. They also host a variety of free events such as classes of English Lessons and Traditional Javanese dances as well as a study group where children regularly meet to discuss and share problem-solving.

The need for local governments to recognise public libraries' roles in community building and fostering a strong reading culture still presents a challenge to this day.
